TWENTY-THREE

Noah

It feels like a matter of minutes since I drifted back to sleep but the sound of my phone vibrating across the bedside table pulls me to the surface. My movements are slow as I fight my way through the grogginess, reaching for my phone. With half closed eyes, I connect the call, bringing it to my ear.

“Hello.”

“Noah? Hey.” The relief in Savannah’s voice is palpable and I picture her shoulders relaxing as she continues, “I’m so sorry to bother you but I’ve had a little incident and I kinda…” Savannah pauses and a loud bang sounds on the other end of the phone, followed by an eerie silence.

Suddenly alert, I bolt up in bed, rubbing the palm not holding the phone over my thigh. There’s an urgency to my tone that I don’t bother hiding. “Savannah? What’s going on?”

The line remains quiet before Savannah’s voice murmurs distractedly, “Ya know what, it’s just a dog. I’ve got this.”

Hell no. She called me looking for help, I’ll be damned if she deals with whatever is happening on her own. Before she can disconnect the call I reply, injecting as much authority into my voice as I can, “Savannah. Tell me where you are.”

Throwing the covers off, I climb from the bed, moving around my room as I gather my clothes, waiting for her to respond. Sporadically I check my phone to make sure the call’s still connected.

Suddenly the speakers blare with the noise of a dog growling before Savannah breathlessly replies, “Honestly, Noah, it’s fine. Miss. Dixie got into… somethin’ and is…” She pauses as if she doesn’t want to say the words. “Well, she’s runnin’ around the house with…” Savannah pauses again.

I hope for Savannah’s sake that there is a good reason for all the dramatics.

“Jeez, how do I say this? My mama would clutch her pearls if she could see what I’m dealin’ with. I swear, you better not tell anyone about this, Noah.”

“I don’t know what I’m not telling anyone about?” My curiosity is well and truly piqued. “Christ, Savannah, just spit it out.”

My hand is on the door knob ready to push it down and walk into the hallway.

“The Great Dane has a giant pink dildo hanging out of its mouth, Noah. I’m not a prude, but she's nearly as big as me and every time I get near her she practically knocks me over.”

The dam breaks and I can’t help the laugh that breaks free. A fucking dildo. The image she’s painted has tears of laughter gathering in my eyes.

“I knew I shouldn't’ve told you. This ain’t helpful, Noah,” Savannah admonishes with humor lacing her words. Her voice turns throaty when she says, “You should laugh more often. It sounds good.”

A warmth spreads through me, sobering me up at the same time as it acts like a cold shower. Straightening, I pass through the door and down the hallway. “Savannah, where are you?”

She heaves a sigh, and I can just picture her rubbing her thumb and forefinger across her forehead as she thinks of a plan.
